Project: Update a patio
We are updating our patio! This is going to be a big project. Watch how we redo it.

We are overhauling our patio! The patio redo process is going to take some time, and I thought it would be fun to share how and what we are doing to update our patio. We love our patio, and every time a friend of mine visits, she calls it our outdoor room. When we are done with it, our patio will be even more room-like.

Between our son’s upcoming fifth birthday party in our backyard, and noticing that our patio furniture needs to be repaired — again — my husband and I decided our patio needed an update. We’ve been blessed to have the patio furniture he grew up with, which his parents gave to us. It’s served us well, but it’s pretty outdated.

(We also need to get the bikes off the patio and into a proper storage space.)

Another problem is we love to have dinner outside almost every night, but the sun shines right in our faces at that time of day. My handy husband already fixed that by installing roll-down shades. When the sun is too bright, the shades come down, then go right back up again when we don’t need them.

We started overhauling our patio by painting the ceiling, replacing the ceiling fan blades and pulls and hanging three wide roller blinds

Pressure cleaning and a fresh coat of paint was next on the list.

We had to pressure clean and paint over the patio walls for the update. Bye-bye, ivy stenciling!

My husband and I did a lot of comparison shopping for new patio furniture. We checked out a lot of stores and Web sites. We finally put in an order this weekend for the big pieces! But we already have this little corner set up.

Part of our patio redo project included adding some furniture that's not under the roof. We found an inexpensive table and chairs set at Home Depot, ditched the chairs in favor of some we already own, and bought an umbrella. I also added some plants to this corner.

Stay tuned to see what’s next on our patio update project list!

  1. Ooo how fun. We are having a deck built off our dining room and I will need to buy furniture for it. I seriously like the little table and chairs in the corner of your patio. Great place for a morning coffee or evening cocktail!

    • Thank you, Chelle! That corner just needed a little something, you know? Can’t wait to see your new deck project on your blog!

  2. Lovely… Can’t wait to see more. Our patio could use some overhauling too but it’s always the last thing on my mind. I love my mom’s backyard oasis with all her flowers and plants, ours looks barren by comparison. But I just don’t have her green thumb…

    • Susi, your mother’s yard sounds really great! And I think I’ve seen your photos of plants in her garden. Honestly our kitchen could attention more than the patio. Other than replacing a few appliances, we haven’t done anything to it, and I really don’t like the cabinets at all. I hope the kitchen makeover will be next!
