Does someone need a hug?

I’m serious!

National Hugging Day™ is in two weeks, and I want to pay it forward to help some people who could use a pick-me-up.

An incredible thing happened last month in the wake of the tragedy in Newtown, Ct. People started doing kind things for others. For perfect strangers. People started doing random acts of kindness. Some people took a cue from Ann Curry and did an act of kindness for each of Newtown’s victims. (I plan to write about this later as part of the Global Team of 200.)

In the spirit of both National Hugging Day and doing kind things for others, please join me to give others a hug. Here’s the scoop:

Give a hug by giving KIND

1. KIND Healthy Snacks — which is always doing kind things as a matter of course — wants to donate an entire case of drool-worthy new KIND Dark Chocolate Nuts & Sea Salt bars to someone who needs a hug. That’s 72 bars! Isn’t that super kind? I love KIND snacks because they are gluten-free and all-natural.

Nominate someone who needs a hug with a blog post

2. If you have a blog or other site, write a post about someone you know who needs a hug. You don’t have to get too personal about their issues, but please make sure to mention and link to this post ( and post by Saturday, Jan. 19. You can even use this button code if you like:

Tropic Home and Family
<div align="center"><a href="" title="Tropic Home and Family"><img src="" alt="Tropic Home and Family" style="border:none;" /></a></div>

One post will be randomly chosen so the person who needs a hug can receive the case of KIND snacks! (Continental USA only.)

There also might be some surprises for bloggers.

The big news: For every post written, I will personally donate $1 to Sandy Hook Elementary PTA, up to $100. What do you think? Can we get 100 blog posts?

Feel free to link your post below, by the way.

We can all kind it forward!

Nominate someone who needs a hug by commenting

3. If you don’t have a blog, you can still mention someone who you know needs a hug in the comments below. I will randomly choose five people to receive a Hallmark gift card so you can give a card or keepsake to the person who needs a hug. Just make sure I have a way to reach you if you’re the winner. USA and Canada only, please.

Share the huggy-ness in a photo

4. Or you can also choose to submit a photo of a hug at the flickr group I set up here.

I will randomly choose a photographer to win a $10 Starbucks gift card. USA and Canada only, please.

If you’re game, you may participate to the full — blog post, comment and flickr — but no one may win more than one prize.

I’ll announce winners and general revelry on National Hugging Day, Jan. 21.
